Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage System

Megawatt-hour storage that charges and discharges for the grid or a solar plant.

Rating
MW / MWh scale
Versions
Centralised or distributed blocks, phased build-out

Best for: Grid operators, IPPs, and solar plants that must firm their output.

  • Container blocks built and tested in the factory
  • PCS and transformer skids
  • Plant controller for grid services
  • Designed for phased expansion

A utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) stores energy in megawatt-hours and releases it on the grid’s schedule — shifting solar output into the evening peak, stabilising frequency, or deferring a network upgrade.

Building blocks

  • Battery containers with racks, BMS, HVAC and fire protection.
  • PCS and medium-voltage transformer skids that connect each block to the plant grid.
  • Plant controller and EMS that follow the dispatch or grid-service signals.

What decides the design

The power and duration (for example a two- or four-hour system), the grid code at the connection point, and how capacity is maintained over the years — through oversizing at the start or adding containers later. We state these assumptions clearly in the proposal so tenders can be compared like for like.

Common configurations

  • Centralised
  • Distributed storage units
  • Phased build-out

What we confirm before quoting

Our engineers check these points with you, so the quotation fits your site rather than a catalogue default.

  1. 1Power and usable energy (MW / MWh)
  2. 2Duration and daily cycles
  3. 3Point of connection and grid code
  4. 4End-of-life capacity and augmentation
  5. 5Land, access and permits

Frequently asked questions

Do you handle grid studies and permits?

Those are led by the developer and local consultants. We provide the equipment data, models and documents they need.

How is capacity loss over the years handled?

Either the plant is oversized at the start, or containers are added later (augmentation). The proposal states which approach is used and the capacity expected at end of life.

What tests are done before utility equipment ships?

Factory acceptance tests on each block — insulation, BMS functions, cooling and fire-system checks, and PCS functional tests where the PCS is integrated. You or a third-party inspector can witness them.

Which documents do grid studies and permits need from you?

Datasheets, single-line diagrams, protection settings, harmonic and fault-current data, fire-protection descriptions and simulation models where the utility requests them. We provide them for your consultant and the network operator.
